Sometimes life as a crazy magazine Publisher has its perks. Throughout the years the most rewarding thing has been the relationships I have formed. And May 28th was a great example when SAXON came to town. I had met with frontman/ founder Biff Byford for an interview before their show and he mentioned they had a day off the day after their show and asked me if I could help him go shopping for turquoise jewelry for his wife’s birthday. Biff called me at 1pm the next day and I met up with him and guitarist Doug Scarratt and we were off on our adventure as I was privileged to play tour guide. I had to admit this was a little bit déjà vu for me reminding me when I was a teen and I drove MOTT THE HOOPLE around on my Lerner’s permit to shop at L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis! So here I was with SAXON years later and boy do these guys like to shop! First stop was the Townsquare Mall before a few quick pics at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign on the way. I knew of an Indian Turquoise shop for jewelry at the Mall and we browsed through many shops before hitting the Guitar Center. The guys couldn’t resist trying out guitars and pedals and stocking up on some effects for the rest of their tour. Next stop was The Turquoise Chief on Las Vegas Blvd where Doug picked up a silver bracelet. Then we hit the famous Gold and Silver Pawn Shop since Biff’s kids were a big fan of “Pawn Stars”. The security guard Richard recognized me and asked who I was with. It turned out some of the staff were SAXON fans and we were taken on a private tour. Then it was on to downtown to Fremont Street to try on hats and hit some gift shops before stumbling on AAA Coins around the corner where I found a beautiful watch for Biff’s wife and Biff bought a killer turquoise bracelet. SAXON’s drummer Nigel Glocker and his wife Gina invited us to join them for dinner at PF Chang’s which was absolutely delicious. Thanks for dinner Biff! Then it was off to The Rio before hitting the Strip from the Linq to the Mirage – these guys had endless energy! But as midnight drew close, it was clear this Cinderella would have to return to her real world as the guys boarded their bus bound for California. All I can say is thanks for the great memories guys and please come back soon!
